Yeah, the bystander effect. But I also have to question whether the fact that you're a white man meant that people have an automatic level of respect for you and will guide their attention towards whatever you pay attention to. If another Mexican or a black man stopped to help, would any passerby also have stopped to help? I wish someone would do this experiment...
